HOW TO ADD SOME PEP TO YOUR PORCH THIS FALL

It’s October 1st, y’all … or as others would like to say … “Happy Fall y’all!”

This morning I woke up and it was 50 degrees outside!!!

Perfect weather to decorate your front porch with alllll of the Fall decor 😉

First of all, let me start by saying that I LOVE to decorate my porch all year round … I feel like your front porch is an opener of how you present the rest of your house. It’s like “Hey! We live here and this is the vibe we give off!”

That’s where I’m very intentional and strategic when it comes to outdoor fall and Christmas decorations. (I’ve had woman in the neighborhood compliment me as they go for walks with their young children — especially when I painted my door!)

My number #1 rule: You DON’T want to be TOO overpowering. If you’re that house with a bunch of blow up things and not a lot of class … I may judge you. (Only semi-sort of kidding 😂)

NOW, everyone’s style is different and everybody likes different items in different places on their front porch. For me, I LOVE to decorate right near the front door —especially on either side — depending on the layout of your porch or stoop!

Also, I will make a note that this is ONLY for Fall decor… I’m not a big Halloween decorator, so if you’re looking for that, I’m not the person for you. I love Halloween — it just doesn’t go with the aesthetic of my house!

Let’s get into what items you should be looking for when it comes to decorating your front porch for Fall…

FIRST: Get yourself a BUNCH of pumpkins

I’m talking ALL shapes, sizes and colors. Get some medium pumpkins, large white ones, flat squashes and EVEN some gourds — just make it all similar colors. Here’s a picture of the pumpkin haul I got last weekend from a nearby farm!

SECOND: Add some Fall accents like straw bales.

You can find these literally anywhere this time of year (even some grocery stores). But, I also picked mine up from the farm last weekend. Honestly, I would check farms first because they probably have the best pricing.

The pumpkins and straw bales were less than $50!

THIRD: Invest in some beautiful mums.

I’m pretty boring when it comes to mums, I like the white ones the best, mainly because it goes with the vibe of my front porch, but I’m not opposed to getting colorful ones as well. My mom’s front porch has teal, yellow, peach and some navy blues, so she actually went with yellow mums to pop out the rest of the colors… and it looks great. (Take my word for it — I’d show you a picture below, but she’s currently painting her front door peach 🤩)

Here’s my rule about mums: If you go with large mums, have them be a color that goes with with the vibe of your front porch. If you end up with the multi-colored ones, buy smaller ones that make the colors of your porch pop. This will tie it alllll in together.

Let me explain… you can’t tell in the picture (because my mums haven’t quite bloomed yet), BUT I bought two large white ones AND a small one. Any guesses on the color I chose for the small one!? Yep, you’re right — orange. Why? Because that would make the orange, light green and white colors POP on the pumpkins I bought and it would tie everything in together. I’m alllllll about consistency here!

Where do you buy mums? My favorite place is Home Depot, BUT I’ve also heard that Costco has HUGE mums for just $10… so either works!

And NOW… for the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Introducing… the Quill’s Fall front porch 2021! 👇🏼

As you can see in the picture… one side of our door has more room than the other. This is where you have to get really creative.

If you have a ‘lopsided’ front porch, I would recommend using the SAME type of decor items on either side — but have the BIGGER corner have BIGGER items and MORE accents and the SMALLER corner have SMALLER items with SIMPLE accents.

SMALLER = SIMPLE (I bought the smaller straw bale with just one large pumpkin and small pumpkins to accent.)

BIGGER = MORE (I bought the bigger straw bale, an extra small mum plant, two flat squashes, two medium pumpkins, gourds and small pumpkins to accent.)

Honestly, in the good ole days you COULD just decorate with two potted mums and two big pumpkins, (maybe add in a small pumpkin or two)… but that’s too boring! I LOVE decorating with the flat squashes and the small pumpkins BECAUSE they can be PROPPED UP on the straw bales and create an entirely unique look! 👌🏼 Not to mention using the gourds in spots that feel “open!”
